smoke coming from engine

  • Hi all.,

its been a while since i have been on here!

I have a problem that is driving me mad! I have 2008 Mondeo Saloon
Titanium X 2.2d. I have owned it just coming up a year. 108k on the
clock. I do around 20k a year. And to be honest she drives lovely. About
2 months ago I went on a small journey no more the 12 miles. I got to a
set of traffic lights stopped and started to get a smell coming into
the cabin. I paid no attention I thought it was coming from the car in
front of me. I got to my destination and parked my car. Coming from the
top of the bonnet was a whitish smoke. My Heart sank I was expecting to
open the bonnet and see flames! When I did open the bonnet the smoke
seemed to be coming from the top of the engine bay. I let the car cool
down and gingerly drove it home. No more smoke coming from it. I got it
booked into the garage. I was due a service on the car anyway. They
serviced the car and couldn’t find anything out of place. Got the car
back and it did the same smoking thing again after about a week. So I
phoned the garage and got it booked in again. This time they passed the
car to a specialist garages as they still couldn’t find anything wrong
with it. Once it was at the second garage they advised me it was the EGR Valve
was stuck. This was replaced at the cost of nearly £465 also the car
was slightly hesitating on certain gears which I did notice but not
enough to worry about too much. So the garage said it could be the
injectors so they also gave me some fort engine conditioner and a bottle
of DPF Cleaner. I used these as soon as I got the car back. The
hesitation on certain gears has gone now. So I am hoping the injectors
aren’t the problem. The car drives really nice. She is pulling much
better than she ever has. Last night did a small journey again and this
time smoking really bad from the same section of engine as before. So I
turned the car off, luckily for me I was near maccy D’s so me and my
little one went and sat in there for half hour. Again I gingerly drove
it home. I have used the car today and no smoke at all. So I not sure
what it could be. Have I been ripped off on the EGR ? did it really need
a replacement! He did show the one he took of my car and it was full of
Carbon. I have had the DPF checked at the first garage that I went too
when they did the service. They tested the DPF said it was 14% So I
don’t think it’s anything to do with a regen on that DPF! But I could be
wrong. Cars and there complexities aren’t really my game! I thought I
would throw this out to you guys and see if you have any suggestions. I
will ring the garage again, But I worried they will say it’s the
injectors! Any help would be really appreciated.

    Thanks in advance guys!

    Felix

  • Could it be that the fuel fired heater just does what it should? From your model year and engine you should have one.

If this is the case it can most likly be programmed to be a programmable pre heater ;)

  • I fear it can be everything.
What is the taste of smell?
Every cause has different kind of smell.

  • We have heard from the earlier models that the exhaust manifold can come loose. Probably this in conjunction with a DPF regen may cause the issue. I recommend to take the car to a workshop where you could observe the work they are doing on your vehicle. It is a bit tricky to check the manifold but once you have access it should be clearly visible by signs of carbon and/or heat in this area.

Die von den meisten Fahrern am wenigsten beherrschte Strecke zwischen zwei Geraden ist eine Kurve.
    Was das heißt?

  • The additional heater is driven by Diesel so it smells like that too. Should be coming out of the (in the UK) near side front wing, where the heaters exhaust is located. Mind you, what bothers me a little is that you say it is white smoke, which doesnt really fit the other theory of a loose exhaust manifold.

How about the cooling fluid levels? Are they ok?
