3rd party reverse camera replacement question.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry for the English post, don't know enough German to write here.

I don't think this question is answered in the wiki, I've read the relevant parts over and over.

If I want to replace the original camera with a 3rd party one, can I chop off the hirose connector on the original camera and splice in the new camera on the connector? For power and ground, and lvds+/- to the camera feed?

I know I could plug it in directly into my head unit or get a v70 antenna connector and plug it in the video module in the trunk. But if I could reuse the connector, I don't have to pull everything apart 😊

    Thanks.

  • The short answer is "no". The original camera uses an LVDS transmission having image data and control data (LIN) in it, tge videomodule is build for that, so it is very special and i did not find any other car using the same method where to get a camera from. Some use LVD as well but with different protocol.

What you can(!) do, of course, is to chop off of the camera cable in the trunk on both ends and simoly reuse the cable, instead of mounting a new one into the trunk, just to route the videoline to the connector towards the front, but not through the videomodule itself! But i won't recommend this...

  • Thanks Go4IT!

Good to know. Should have known it wasn't that easy.

  • I tried to search other brands with builds in the same timespan of 2009-2012 having backup cameras and was hoping to find some using a Valeo system as well. If any other brand also uses a Valeo system, it could be likely that they are technically the same and so their cams may be compatible. But in fact i did not found any other. A good hunch was Peugeot, Opel, GM/Cadillac but looks like they use different approaches, most of them don't use an external videomodule but instead incorporate it into the head-unit (which makes much more sense in my opinion), so Ford/Volvo made it different, for whatever reason, than all others. Well...

Yeah seems quite an unusual approach. Thanks for the info again, saves me so time searching.

And yes I could use the physical cables only, to skip routing new cables all the way, but as you mention in the wiki, makes it quite tricky in case I would need to restore the original some day(even though it is very unlikely considering the camera price).
